Osian

Osian is a gentle soul who loves nothing more than cuddles! Osian’s perfect day out would be a spa day complete with massage and jacuzzi. He certainly likes the finer things in life like the hot weather and lazy days. Oshi will never give a fake smile, so you know that when you’ve got him, and he recognises you, it's genuine joy he’s feeling. In the workshop setting, Oshi tends to show us that he likes the most peculiar sounds and sensations, rather than “typical” ones that we might assume he would like. Oshi’s reaction to sensory elements really pushes the creativity out towards a space that feels unusual. For example, he enjoys silence, anticipation, whispering, repetition and a single stimulus at a time. Oshi is a valued member of the creative team and his presence in the space is magic.

imogen

Hi, I am Imogen. I have Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities; I have a rare genetic condition called Angelman Syndrome and I also have Severe Epilepsy. I love spending time with my friends and family especially when I get to go to the theatre. I am currently in my final year at Ty Gwyn School and am looking at going to college next year. My family do all they can to ensure I can take every opportunity to experience and explore my world. Even though it sometimes can be a struggle, especially when an environment is not wheelchair accessible. My love for the theatre comes from seeing a live story being told, this engages me with with the multi-sensory approach, from the lighting and sound to the smells and the feel of being in a shared space with others in a the theatre. I love watching the story being told even though I might not always understand what is going on.

James

My son James was born with a unique genetic condition and he presented with complex needs, physical and learning disabilities, was non-verbal and had dual sensory impairment.

Accessing live performance was always important to us as a family and from an early age James expressed his creativity through dressing up, storytelling, music and performance.

We regularly took James to a wide variety of events, including ballet, opera, musical theatre, plays and an annual trip to the pantomime on Christmas Eve.

His love for theatre was so strong that when he was granted a wish through a charity (Make-A-Wish), he chose to see Shrek The Musical in The West End.

Despite our determination to give James access to a wide range of cultural activities we faced many Barriers.

Sadly James passed away in 2015 at the age of 19.

Unfortunately many of the challenges we faced when James was alive still exist today. Through my work with Oshi’s World I hope to help bring about change in his memory.
